Rhythm & Bones Press is a small independent press and literary magazine founded by Tianna G. Hansen that is dedicated to dynamic and inspiring authors, whose work deserves to be shared and acknowledged. We specialize in Authors who write with personal emotion and those with trauma to portray to the world.

We aim to help turn Trauma into Art.

ABOUT

We began as a small literary magazine online, focusing on the darker side of literature, and slowly grew into a small press with a mindset to help amplify voices and turn trauma into art. Find our book publications here, check out our literary magazine issues, or read on to learn more about us!

We aim to help all authors who wish to try and publish dynamic work, with a specialty in the genre of trauma. Our goal may sound simple: turn trauma into art. It is not simple, however. Trauma is multifaceted; trauma grows in many different ways, takes form in different shapes and "beasts", if you will. Trauma is often nameless, speechless. It can rip a hole in you and leave you gasping, leave you unsure of yourself, your identity in the world, and how to move forward. We want to provide an outlet for people who have experienced life-changing traumatic events who seek to express this in the written form. We hope in helping these dynamic authors get published, we can help those who are struggling with trauma, to gain some inspiration and help them create new chapters of hope.

We wish to help not just the authors of dynamic work, but the readers. We believe there is a huge range of authors whose inspirational words are overlooked and that the writing community and the world at large is at a loss without these stories. We truly believe these types of works can help in healing, and inspire those who are dealing with similar mental health issues, PTSD from traumatic events, and life experiences that can leave a mark. We aim to publish books that inspire hope and belief that readers are not alone. Our founder, Tianna G. Hansen, is a survivor of sexual assault and domestic/sexual abuse. She holds a safe space for this work, as the small press side is run by her alone at the moment.

Our market is without borders, all are welcome to join our Rhythm & Bones family. We feel there is a market that has been overlooked for a long time now and feel that this is an injustice, not just to the author but to potential readers. We like to think, there are two people, in two different places, with similar experiences, who can help one another through the written word. One by writing, the other by reading. We wish for Rhythm & Bones Press to be not only a publisher, but to help grow a community of support for survivors and highlight many voices.

Meet the R&B Team!

We're so excited to have the chance to review your words and honored that you entrusted us with your work. We are all writers ourselves and understand the effort that goes into each submission. We will treat it with the care we would want our own work treated with.

Our Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Tianna G. Hansen, has been writing her whole life with poetry as her first love, though she received her MFA in fiction and dabbles in creative nonfiction. Tianna is working on a debut novel about women who survive trauma as well as a memoir. Her debut collection Undone, Still Whole is currently out of print but explores healing from trauma and reclaiming the body. Her first microchap Becoming the Wolf (Ghost City Press, 2020) takes the idea of transformation and werewolves from a personal lens and a trauma standpoint. Her work has previously appeared or is forthcoming in numerous publications, both online and in print. In her free time she gardens and wanders the woods as a wolf woman. Follow her on Twitter @tianng92 or check out her published writing on CreativeTianna.com. You can hire her as an editor over at our Editorial Services page!

Our Assistant Editor & Graphic Designer, Renee Firer’s passion for writing flared to life when her 5th grade teacher taught her the power of the written word. Since then, she has filled her days with stories, while somehow finding the time to receive her MFA this past May. She is a DC comic loving, MarioBros. obsessed, self-proclaimed comedian suffering from a very bad—or would it be considered good?—case of wanderlust. When she’s not working on her novel, she’s spoiling her puppies, losing her pens, and planning her next worldly adventure. Her work has previously appeared in  Loco Mag and Drabblez Mag. Follow her on Twitter @ReneeFirer or check out her writing on reneefirer.com.

Our Associate Editor & Time Manager, Charlie Allison, surrounds himself with dying languages, fading pantheons and idle speculation. He’s worn many hats: working as a chess coach, a groundskeeper, an English tutor, creative writing instructor for adults with learning disabilities, and an amateur circus acrobat. His current headwear is that of an amateur Mesoamerican scholar, bureaucrat, storyteller and short story writer. Charlie is working on the draft of his second novel–after launching the first into space. His work has appeared in The Stonecoast Review, Ellipsis Zine, Pickman’s Press, Podcastle and Devilfish Review. He can be found at his website (www.charlie-allison.com) and on Twitter @cballison421.

Our Business Manager, Scott Hansen, has a degree in Business Management from Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott is British/Danish and interested in business and law. He has poured his heart into creating a successful plan for Rhythm & Bones Press to continue growing, and is proud to be part of its endeavors. His interests are sailing, hiking outdoors, and practicing the art of happiness and Buddhism.

Our Mascot & Editor-in-Residence, Stella Hansen, spends her days exploring the outside world & her nights terrorizing her fellow humans or (blessedly) sleeping. When she isn't up to cat-things, (acting like a regal tigress), she loves laying on a laptop to interpret and edit everyone's work.
